Giving you something to read on the toilet since 2009.

"The mistake lies in seeing debate and discussion as secondary to the recovery of meaning. Rather, we should see them as primary: art and literature do not exist to be understood or appreciated, but to be discussed and argued over, to function as a focus for social dialogue. The discourse of literary or art criticism is not to recover meaning, but to create and contest it. Our primal scene should not be the solitary figure in the dark of the cinema but the group of friends arguing afterwards in the pub."

  1. John, I don't know you so I'm not picking on you, but whenever these lists come out I spot an inconsistency that I have to mention.

You should choose (either way) if groups of movies (trilogies, for example) count as one or two or three films. In your list, as in others on this blog, Back to the Future and Lord of the Rings are treated as a single item, while Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade are addressed separately.

Now I don't mean to split hairs but we need some basic guidelines if you're going to compare apple to apples. Sure Lord of the Rings as a trilogy ranks high on the list, but would you rate Fellowship of the Ring above Die Hard, or Lebowski, or A Beautiful Mind? Doesn't it do injustice to the first Bourne film (which was a game changer in my opinion) to lump #2 and #3 with it? Maybe not, as you ranked them highly.

So that's my unsolicited $.02. It's a good list, btw. I'm just appealing to the higher powers here.

  2. This is John, logged in under my wife's name. If you notice the trilogies I chose, they are all movies with continuous story lines. The Indiana Jones Movies all have separate plots that can be viewed separately without seeing the previous movies. In my mind, the Lord of The Ring, Back to The Future, and Bourne Trilogies are one movie separated into three so that they could make more money. I appreciate your concern, and if policies change I will adapt my list, but the creator (Kyle) told me I could make it however I wanted...and so I did.

  3. Dear John,
Forgive me for being a Dick. Your explanation totally legitimizes your decisions and I can get behind your choices.

    Best,
    Rob

  4. This is civil. Kind of wish it was more combative. One Love.
